Elevator
The introduction of the elevator ended an entire period of architectural history, and relegated another element – the stair – to a bit part role in buildings. As the enabler of the skyscraper and the modern metropolis, the elevator’s origins first in the mining industry and later in theater scenography were mostly forgotten as it disappeared into the core.
